Guild Wars 2's Fifth Expansion Arriving in August

ArenaNet and NCSoft announced the fifth expansion for MMORPG Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2: Janthir Wilds will release for PC on August 20, 2024. It will be priced at $24.99 and some with three major post-launch updates in the period until summer 2025. In addition, the game will be made available on the Epic Games Store later this summer.

Janthir Wilds's story takes place following the events of previous expansion Secrets of the Obscure as players make contact with the pastoral Lowland Kodan in the rugged region of Janthir while discovering the secret of a primordial magic. There will be two new maps for players to explore at launch, with a third to be added in a later update. The expansion will also add the new two-handed spear weapon type, the Warclaw mount to single-player exploration, a new raid, the new Homesteads player housing system, and more.

Guild Wars 2 is set 250 years after the events of the original Guild Wars. It was originally released in 2012, becoming available on Steam in 2022, and currently has four expansions: Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons, and Secrets of the Obscure. The game and expansions are available as buy-to-play titles.

1.0.5 Update - A lot of improvements

Finally, another big update. This one covers a lot. On the one hand certain edge cases are fixed but also a lot of minor stuff which many players will encounter is improved.

There is also now a way to avoid the first incident with the tripwire. I'm unsure if it is the right move from a game design perspective, since it's the first time you encounter the incident mechanic which I really like, but it makes sense that you can simply destroy the tripwire.

When I started working on it, the most important aspect was to remove the overlapping wall which was introduced with 1.0.4 but I put in more and more time and so the update grew to what it is now. I hope you like it!

In case you missed the news last week, Digital Eclipse, those retro masterminds behind a number of today's best gaming compilations, worked their magic on a remake of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. As expected, it's great, but there was a nice bonus on the audio side with its music.

That's because composer Winifred Phillips produced it. She's worked on a number of great games in the past, including favorites like God of War, Assassin's Creed III: Liberation and the LittleBigPlanet series, among countless others.

So what goes into composing a soundtrack for a game such as this? Luckily, Winifred took the time to sit down and talk to us about it, as well as working with the folks at Digital Eclipse. Sit back and enjoy!

How did you get involved with Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord?

Over a year ago, Digital Eclipse reached out to me to discuss music needs for a project they were working on: the full 3D remake of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. I'd heard of the Wizardry franchise, and I understood the importance of Wizardry to the history of roleplaying video games, dungeon-crawlers in general, and all games based on TTRPG.

The original Wizardry was developed for Apple II by two Cornell University students in the 1980s, and it went on to become a truly foundational game in the history of gaming - paving the way for all RPGs that followed, and heavily influencing game franchises like Baldur's Gate, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy. When Digital Eclipse asked me to compose the music for their remake of the very first Wizardry game, I was really excited!

What was it like working with the wizards (see what I did there?!) at Digital Eclipse?

It was amazing - the Digital Eclipse developers really are wizards! Digital Eclipse has a history of developing lovingly-crafted remakes of important games from the history of video gaming, and their dedication and passion really shine through. They want gamers to fully experience the heart and soul of the original games, even as they introduce updates that make the games more accessible for modern audiences.

Playing one of these Digital Eclipse games is like taking a trip through time. Digital Eclipse allows modern gamers to play and appreciate the brilliance of early games, recognizing and celebrating what makes them important to the history of gaming.

At the same time, when developing a remake like Wizardry, Digital Eclipse is essentially recreating the magic of exploring the dungeon - the emotional awe and excitement that gamers in the 80s would have experienced - by updating the aesthetics and the interface so that they're satisfying to modern players. It was such an honor working with the team at Digital Eclipse!

Thank you for your patience while we worked on this major update to get the Broken Roads 1.2 patch live.

We've taken on board the feedback from your reviews to add features, make changes, include new options, completely open up the early game, and greatly expand on companion reactions.

The work is not at all done and there is much more still to come, but we hope you enjoy this first big patch which focuses on all four origin stories through to the gates of Merredin.

We did also tackle some mid and late game moments that players requested, so take note that THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THE NOTES BELOW.

Weekly Dev Update: June 3, 2024

Hey everyone!

Phil here. Just wanted to provide a quick update on what we've been working on since our last weekly update. We've been really heads down on development of our next update, so I'll keep this brief (for now) but I (or Thomas) will be back soon with a more in-depth update with a lot more details on what's happening.

For now, here's the high level view:
  • Created a basic working version of the Dynamic Quest system
  • Progress made on an internal design tool we are using for the Event system and designing events
  • Began work on implementing a new UI (the new primary HUD is now working in the game and in combat, we're now working on adding in the ability to cast spells in combat)
  • Continued to refactor the stat system
  • More conversation event examples written for testing
  • Added 2 new members to the team (Lucas, our new artist, and Sammi, a new additional game designer)
  • Honed in on our implementation of Scrum in order to iterate on our processes and improve rapidly
  • A new stained glass shader working in game for... UI reasons...
  • Started work on a new dice rolling interface
As someone leading the new UI development, I must say that the new HUD gives so much more breathing room for the art to shine, and while it's still a while yet until it is released, I'm really excited for it!

  • Community oriented development - we want YOU to have a say regarding which features come first, give us ideas and vote for the kind of stuff you want to see in the game before we fully release it!
  • Still under development - aside from being bugged, unbalanced and half-baked, this means we can end up with a zombie-shoot'em'up by release, provided you manage to convince enough players to vote for such features!

Community Update #27 Official Modding Support

Hey everyone,

We come bringing news of Patch 7!

Finally, we hear you say - but don't get ready to throw yourself into our next patch just yet, we've got a lot of work to do to bring you our first iteration of modding tools, evil endings, plus a whole bunch of fixes, quality of life improvements, and more that we'll go into detail about in a future Community Update!

Coming to you this September, the next major update for Baldur's Gate 3 will also introduce an officially sanctioned toolkit for giving Lae'zel a mullet. I mean, sure, go for it. You only live once.

As we mentioned in our last Community Update, we want you to have the opportunity to test out Patch 7 and the Baldur's Gate 3 Toolkit so you can share your feedback with us before it goes live!

Patch 7 testing is now being split into a two-phase process, which begins with working closely with a small team of mod authors from the community. This is our closed alpha stage, where they'll be able to help us further develop the modding tools, and have a go at bringing their existing mods to life using our Baldur's Gate 3 Toolkit.

The closed alpha is set to kick off today, June 3rd, and we'll be inviting more mod authors to take part over time.

Come July, we'll be opening registration for a further closed beta, capped at roughly 1,000 players, that anyone on PC can go ahead and sign up for - and we want you to test the mods created during the alpha!

With the intention of working through your feedback throughout the summer, it will give us time to polish off Patch 7 ready for release in September. In the meantime, we still have plenty coming your way, including some anniversary extravagance as we look back on the months since release. We're also still pressing on with the development of an in-game photo mode, crossplay, and more fixes that will arrive later down the line!
